Year End Message 2024

Dear WCA Community,

As we welcome 2025, it’s the perfect time to look back on everything we accomplished together as a global community in 2024. Over the past year, we saw more than 2,700 competitions take place across 102 countries, with over 63,000 participants, including 32,954 newcomers! Along the way, 4,038 National Records, 245 Continental Records, and 59 World Records were broken at the competitions. Additionally, 9 new Regional Organizations were recognized, bringing the total number of WCA-recognized ROs to 46!

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the organizing team for their dedication and meticulous planning, which will bring us the World Championship 2025 in Seattle, USA. A special thanks to RUBIK’S CUBE® for their continued partnership and invaluable support, which also played a key role in the 6 successful Continental Championships that we had in 2024. Their sponsorship helped make these competitions possible, and we hope many of you were able to attend or enjoy streams of the action live!

The WCA relies on a dedicated team of volunteers to keep the organization running smoothly. This year, we celebrated the promotions of 4 Senior Delegates, 117 Delegates, 146 Junior Delegates, and 121 Trainee Delegates, while also welcoming 80 new members to our Committees and Teams. The Board of Directors saw changes, with Nick Silvestri joining as a new Board member and Blake Thompson being re-elected to serve his second term. These volunteers are essential to the WCA’s success, and we are deeply grateful for their dedication and support.

With the support of new members, the WCA Committees and Teams worked hard and reached significant milestones in 2024. The WCA Software Team made significant advancements, with 872 pull requests along with 137 translation updates merged, and the revamped registration system launched, which was made possible largely with the help of paid contractors. Despite the increasing number of competitions, the WCA Results Team maintained an average of 7 hours to post results, while the WCA Competition Announcement Team averaged 7 hours and 35 minutes to approve competitions. The WCA Communication Team posted over 131 times on social media, while the WCA Executive Assistants Team kept track of internal organizational changes throughout the year, which was a lot to manage. The WCA Marketing Team had over 10,000 views across the WCA merchandise. The WCA Financial Committee made a substantial impact through its funding programs. Equipment funding provided competition equipment to 12 countries, including 99 timers, 87 displays, and other necessary materials. In addition, the WCA Financial Committee launched the RO Support Funding program, which provided assistance to 5 existing Regional Organizations and helped 1 new Regional Organization achieve recognition. Altogether, these programs provided approximately $28,000 in funding. Another major success was the introduction of the RO-supported Dues Waiver program, which allowed 34 countries to host National Championships without paying WCA Dues, saving local communities a total of $27,000 that was reinvested into improving these championships and supporting growth. The WCA Regulations Committee released updated Regulations, which are now in effect as of January 1, 2025.

In addition to these efforts, two new committees and one team were established to strengthen the organization. The WCA Appeals Committee (WAC) was created as a dedicated committee to handle appeals, ensuring fairness and transparency for the community. The WCA Major Championship Team (WMCT) was formed to provide consistent and high-quality experiences at major championships, enhancing the overall standard of these events. Furthermore, on August 1st, the WCA Integrity Committee (WIC) was established through the merger of the WCA Ethics Committee and the WCA Disciplinary Committee, streamlining processes for handling violations of the Spirit, Code of Conduct, Code of Ethics, and Regulations of the WCA. Together, the WDC and WIC opened 79 disciplinary investigations and closed 71, showing how this new structure has improved efficiency. Just as important is the work of the WCA Archive Team, the WCA Quality Assurance Committee, the WCA Sports Organization Team, and the WCA Board, who support the WCA immensely every day.

As we step into 2025, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made 2024 such a remarkable year for the WCA. Once again, our success would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our volunteers, who generously contribute their time and resources to support the community every day. As we move forward, we remain committed to improving our organization and welcome your input through the Community Survey, set to launch in early 2025. Let’s make 2025 another incredible year together.

Wishing you all a happy, fulfilling, and successful year ahead!

Call for Applicants – WCMT Members (January 2025)

The WCA Major Championships Team is looking for new members! We are looking for a diverse group, with people from as many continents and backgrounds as possible. Applications are open to everyone; it is not a requirement to hold a current position in the WCA to be considered, but having organized a National Championship or Major competition will be valued greatly.

The duties and responsibilities of the team are covered in WCA Motion 10.2024.14, but these are to be expanded in the near future. In summary, this team will conduct the application process for the Continental and World Championships, overseeing the multiple organizing teams before and after the application periods, helping transmit the knowledge acquired by the different Core Teams of past championships.

The new WMCT members will help establish the route for the newly created team, by helping document all of the different resources that have previously been used and creating new ones. WMCT will soon be helping out with the 2026 and 2027 Major Championship application periods.

Requirements

The qualities and requirements expected of candidates are:

  • Availability of around 2-5 hours a week, with some periods of high activity, and the ability to work under pressure with strict deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate comfortably in English.
  • Having organized a National or Major Championship before (or a big competition with multiple stages, sponsors, big budgets, streaming, etc).
  • Having attended and staffed at a Major Championship.

How to apply

Candidacy documents must include:

  • A brief introduction.
  • Summary of the activities done for the WCA, Regional Organization or the cubing community.
  • Detailed description of your role in the organization of the National/Big/Major Championship. How do you think this past experience would benefit the WMCT?
  • Motivation on joining the WMCT.
  • (Optional) Ideas you would suggest to implement at future Major Championships.

Candidacy documents must be in PDF format. The application period is open for candidates to submit their candidacy document from now until January 31st 2024, 23:59 UTC privately to Rubén López de Juan (rjuan@worldcubeassociation.org).

You can expect a reply to confirm whether your application is complete, and may receive a request for an interview with the WMCT Leader and up to two other members.

If you have any questions about WMCT work or the application cycle, you may email Rubén López de Juan (rjuan@worldcubeassociation.org).

Integrity Committee Digest 2024-Q4

Dear WCA Community,

In the last quarter, the WCA Integrity Committee opened 16 cases and closed 14. This resulted in eight bans, three warnings, two with no action. Below, you can find summaries of some notable cases:

  • The WCA Integrity Committee was informed of negative behavior by two competitors at multiple competitions. We contacted several potential witnesses and discovered a persistent pattern of bullying, harassment, abuse, and intimidation that undermines the WCA’s Spirit, Mission, and Code of Conduct. The WIC determined that stronger measures were necessary to protect the integrity of the speedcubing community, restore confidence in the WCA amongst speedcubers within this particular region, and send a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated. We considered the presence of both competitors at competitions highly disruptive and therefore issued a multi-year ban from both competing and attending WCA competitions.
  • The WCA Integrity Committee was informed of recurrent, disruptive behavior of a competitor at multiple competitions. We contacted the involved delegates and, after receiving their concerns, concluded that the accused competitor consistently failed to properly perform various tasks and comply with delegates‘ directions. Considering that the accused competitor had already been banned for this kind of behavior, we decided to issue a ban from competing.
  • The WCA Integrity Committee was informed of recurrent and problematic behavior of a competitor. The delegate informed us that the accused competitor crossed boundaries with another competitor, without any prior provocation. Considering that the accused competitor had already been banned twice for the same behavior, we decided to issue a multi-year ban from competing and attending WCA competitions.
  • The WCA Integrity Committee was informed that a banned competitor had been attending multiple competitions. Given that the accused competitor had been banned from both competing and attending WCA competitions, the ban conditions were changed to permanent until the competitor does not attend competitions consistently for the length of their original ban.
  • The WCA Integrity Committee was informed that a competitor was caught using CFOP algorithms while solving blindfolded. The delegates also highlighted the poor use of the harmonica holder. The competitor ad,.mitted to cheating, but claimed that he had not cheated before that particular attempt. However, we discovered a video online from another blindfolded attempt that was achieved using a similar method. The affected results were disqualified and the competitor was given a short ban.

The WCA Integrity Committee opened a call for applicants last month. New members will be onboarded soon. The following members accepted positions onto the WIC:

  • Alexander Mutch (2014MUTC01) – Canada (British Columbia)
  • Amanda Schmid (2017SCHM12) – USA (Ohio)
  • Amélie Dieterich (2016DIET01) – Germany
  • Austin Reed (2011REED01) – USA (New York)
  • Bertie Longden (2014LONG06) – United Kingdom (South)
  • Hayden Ng (2018NGHA02) – Australia (Queensland)
  • Jason Chang (2023CHAN15) – USA (California)
  • Mohamed Arif (2019ARIF05) – India
  • Noah Swor (2017SWOR01) – USA (Florida)
  • Yuji Yoshida (2015YOSH01) – Philippines
  • Zachary Miller (2017MILL04) – USA (Massachusetts)

For 2025, the WCA Integrity Committee plans to invest in initiatives towards better training and guidance for Delegates with an emphasis on competitor safety and well-being. These initiatives began in 2024, and there is still a lot of work to be done. These new members bring us a wide range of personal and professional experiences that will allow the WIC to more effectively separate delegate responsibilities and projects. Congratulations to all of the new members!

Do you have questions for the WIC? Feel free to send us an email (integrity@worldcubeassociation.org), or ask your question in the Integrity section of the WCA forum.
