Integrity Committee Report on a Case of Cheating (Sep 2025)

Dear WCA Community,

Este informe también se ha traducido al español para facilitar su acceso a la región afectada. Haz clic aquí para ver la versión en español.

The Integrity Committee has concluded an investigation on a case of cheating by a former National Record-holding Competitor in multiple events spanning several competitions. As a result, they have been banned for 2-years and 6-months from competing.

The Competitor, who initially denied any wrongdoing until presented with evidence, also had their results disqualified spanning several years, with the exception of 3x3x3 Fewest Moves. Because the competitor was uncooperative, the WIC disqualified their times from all competitions where the results were suspected to be illegitimate.

The intent of this report is to publish the reasons behind the decision to ban the Competitor and disqualify their results. This document also aims to serve as a warning of the potential incidents that can occur due to inattentive judges, and to demonstrate the WIC’s commitment to fairness in all regions. The WIC later clarifies the Committee’s current stance on disqualifications in case of cheating as a whole.

The WIC has elected to fully anonymize this report due to the age of the accused competitor. The WIC strongly discourages the community from publicizing the name of the accused competitor for this reason. The full report can be found here.

Kind Regards,
Shain Longbehn (WIC Leader)
On behalf of the WCA Integrity Committee

Integrity Committee Digest 2025-Q2

Dear WCA Community,

In the last quarter, the WIC opened 12 cases and closed 9. This resulted in 4 bans, while 6 cases ended with no action. Below, you can find summaries of some notable cases:

  • The WCA Integrity Committee received a complaint from a competitor regarding perceived unfair treatment from Delegates. This competitor felt that the Delegates had overstepped their role and made unreasonable requests towards the competitor. The WIC found that the Delegates acted within the scope of their role and asked a reasonable request of the competitor. The WIC would like to advise competitors that should they disagree with a Delegate’s decision, they should comply with the request and later file a dispute as defined in 16.2025.1 – Disputes if necessary.
  • The WCA Integrity Committee was informed of cheating through manipulation of scorecards by a competitor. The WIC contacted the involved delegates and judges to investigate the possibility of scorecard manipulation in each round this competitor competed in and found evidence of scorecard manipulation in multiple rounds across several competitions. The WIC also concluded one of the judges who had been contacted attempted to cover up for the competitor. The competitor was issued a ban from competing, while the judge was also issued with a short ban for assisting the competitor.
  • The WCA Integrity Committee was informed of an incident where a competitor sent threats to individuals online, specifically targeting WCA competitors and competitions. The WIC found that these actions posed a significant threat to the maintenance of a safe WCA competition environment and were major violations of the Code of Conduct. As a result, the perpetrator was given a multi-year ban and appropriate authorities were involved. The WIC strongly recommends that the local authorities are involved first where safety is concerned.
